Troy Bates is an Executive Vice President at J.S. Held with over 31 years of experience in equipment loss consulting. He specializes in equipment damage assessment, the feasibility of repair versus replacement, comparable replacement analysis / estimates, actual cash value estimates, production impact resolution, and claim evaluation. Troy has evaluated a wide variety of equipment and systems including, but not limited to, information technologies, electronics, medical equipment, telecommunications, and other specialized equipment. His areas of concentration include high-end computer hardware, personal computers, application software, operating systems, programming languages, data recovery, printers and printing routing technology, telephone switch equipment, switches, routers, networking topologies, data cabling, and telecommunication cabling.
Mike Casey, PhD

Mike Casey is a graduate of Columbia University, where he received a Ph.D in Metallurgical Engineering. While at Columbia, he conducted research for NASA on design and fabrication of high-temperature nickel-based alloys that are used for rotating components in jet engines and land-based gas turbines.
Dr. Casey has authored hundreds of technical reports for plant owners, insurance companies and attorneys. He has also lectured at local and national engineering meetings and conferences. Dr. Casey has represented clients in disputes and has provided testimony in arbitration proceedings, depositions and at trial. He has been engaged in the investigation of accidents, equipment failures, corrosion, structural failures, fires, explosions, and other problems at industrial plants as well as in the construction, transportation, and marine industries for more than 30 years. Projects have included metallurgical, materials, and mechanical engineering evaluations and failure analyses of boilers, boiler tubes, dryers, Yankee Dryers, suction rolls, calendar rolls, presses, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, tanks, pumps, turbines, generators and other equipment in power plants, chemical plants, refineries, pulp and paper mills, and other industrial plants.

Magi Curtis has spent her career in healthcare – both policy and business sides of the industry. She specializes in helping healthcare executives through significant times of challenge and/or change so they can transform their organizations and achieve their business goals. Magi has guided some of the nation’s leading health systems, provider-based organizations, and payors as they navigated enterprise level change management initiatives, strategic partnerships and post-merger integration, strategic positioning, government relations and significant issue campaigns, crisis events and internal and external engagement efforts. She has also worked closely with founders of emerging healthcare companies to scale their business and establish operational structures to maximize productivity and enable growth. Served as the operations lead for a fast-growing healthcare AI company.
Nadia Moore, PhD, DABT, CIH, ERT

Nadia Moore has more than twenty-five years of multidisciplinary experience in toxicology, exposure science, regulatory compliance, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. Dr. Moore provides toxicology, exposure science/industrial hygiene, and analytical chemistry consulting services for human health-related issues, including whether a chemical or physical agent can cause or has caused an injury, exposure assessment in diverse scenarios, determination of acceptable impurity levels in consumer products, derivation of acceptable exposure levels, and weight-of-evidence analysis of historical/scientific data to gauge present-day conclusions.

Robert Underwood is a Mechanical Engineer with over 35 years of experience and is an Executive Vice President for J.S. Held. Previously, he was the Principal at Werlinger & Associates. J.S. Held and Werlinger & Associates provide technical consulting services for the commercial property claims industry, such as damage assessment, the feasibility of repair versus replacement, replacement cost estimates, fair market equipment appraisals, comparable replacement analyses, production mitigation assessments, and failure analyses. Leading areas of practice are electronics, mechanical systems, aerospace, medical, semiconductors, computers, and telecommunications.
Paul Vaulman
Senior Vice President

Paul Vaulman has over 40 years of experience with equipment and systems in the field of mechanical engineering. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Paul has extensive hands-on experience in equipment and system design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, and troubleshooting. He has worked with processes, equipment, and systems in residential, commercial, and industrial construction and aerospace industries. Areas of experience include plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, process heating, and fire protection systems; wind, solar, and geothermal renewables, oil and biofuel processing, backup power generation, conveying systems, open and closed loop operating systems, and automation. As a mechanical engineer, Paul has performed design, analysis, assessment, and troubleshooting tasks involving commercial and industrial equipment. He has experience with robotics, vision systems, position sensing, and data tracking systems. His manufacturing background includes metal fabrication, machining, finishing, and assembly processes.
