Ocean Tomo was engaged to provide intellectual property valuation and strategic planning services to a midcap energy company. The company, understanding the importance of intellectual property management, retained Ocean Tomo to establish the current value of its patents and trade secrets. Management was pursuing an internal directive to proactively manage and optimize the value of its IP.
Engagement
Ocean Tomo’s work with the company involved looking at the value of the IP portfolio in the context of the company’s own business. A key element of our analysis was an understanding of the benefits and limitations of the client’s technology relative to not only competitors in the hydrogen space, but also to other clean energy alternatives.
In addition to a determination of value, Ocean Tomo performed a market analysis to identify opportunities for IP monetization. This analysis involved working with J.S. Held subject matter experts to identify potential licensing and joint venture partners for the company’s technology with the goal of understanding the value of the IP in the context of these potential arrangements.
Results
Ocean Tomo helped the company gain a holistic understanding of its hydrogen energy technology and its value within the clean tech ecosystem. What gets measured gets managed, and Ocean Tomo helped this client develop a plan to manage and optimize its intellectual property.
